Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy (SRCL) Grant

The Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy (SRCL) grant is a federal grant aimed at improving the reading and writing skills of students. These flow-through funds will directly support Local Education Agencies (LEAs) in their literacy efforts to benefit children from birth through twelfth grade.  Louisiana is one of only six states selected to benefit from the federal grant.

Louisiana’s SRCL grant will be used to fund a new program, Literacy is for Everyone (LIFE) Promise, which is modeled after the state’s highly successful K-12 Literacy Pilot Program

LIFE Promise will be implemented in two cohorts: the first comprised of 17-21 LEAs, which will begin the program in year one; and a second group of eight to ten LEAs, which will begin the program 18 months later. LEAs will be awarded funds based on the strength of their proposed plans.

In April 2012, the Louisiana Department of Education announced the first cohort of 16 local school districts and one charter school that the agency recommended to receive sub-grants.  A second round of grantees will be selected in 2013.
