LEAP and GEE Preparation

This time of year brings a heightened level of energy and tension to many of our schools. LEAP, iLEAP and GEE tests are just weeks away and teachers are busily ensuring that their students are ready. Each year, we hear about schools holding pep rallies and special events to make students aware of the importance of the tests and read interviews with teachers and parents who are stressed about whether the students will pass. I would encourage schools to tone down the events that work to create more stress around this time and instead concentrate all year on the proven practices that ensure students are prepared and know the material that will be presented.

In that vein, the Department of Education has created a Tutoring Hotline for 4th and 8th graders who will take the LEAP exam. This week, every student in the state will receive a practice test that they can take home and familiarize themselves with the types of questions that will be on the exams. And we will have tutors available to help students who need assistance on those questions from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday from February 1st to March 7th.  The phone number is 1-877-453-2721.

We have also created a LEAP/GEE help center on our website at  http://www.louisianaschools.net/. Students will find online programs such as PASS which also provides students with practice questions and online tutorials for each exam and Newton’s Classroom which is a fun site that can be used to help students sharpen their math skills. These online sites are available year round but we have combined them all into one easily accessible site.

This is an important time in our schools but I hope our teachers, principals and Superintendents use the Department’s tools to instill the confidence in students that they do know the information and will succeed on these tests.

I want to compliment the state department on the LEAP practice booklets that were developed for our students. My teachers thought that the publications would be very useful for parents. They really liked the idea that they did not have to gather the material and run it off in order to send home practice work. Thanks for you support.

The Louisiana Parent Training & Information Center, which promotes the appropriate education of children with disabilities, is informing parents about the hotline through our statewide talklist LaDisability Talk and through our in person workshops and online classes. We appreciate the Louisiana Department of Education making information so easily and readily available through the website. The tutoring hotline is a great idea and we are happy to spread the word. We have developed two trainings we call the 3 Ps of Testing: Plan, Prepare, Pass! One on LEAP, the other on GEE and transition into adulthood. I hope that as Superintendent you will continue to remind local superintendents and other administrators that accommodations can be provided. Families often run into difficulty with summer remediation where some have been told that LEAP is a regular ed function and so no accommodations can be provided during summer remediation. Of course, this is a misunderstanding. S.504 is a law that applies to regular education, the Americans with Disabilities Act applies. And while the Individuals with Disabilities Act is a law that is about students with disabilities it promotes students with disabilities being educated alongside peers without disabilities. Thanks for supporting the education of ALL students. La.Parent Training & INformation Center is funded by the US Department of Education through Part D of IDEA.

I recently delivered one of the LEAP workshops for the Louisiana Parent Training and Information Center. As I suspected, those attending came with a number of statements made to them by their school district, teachers and principles that their child couldn't have accommodations that are allowed in LEAP. In my advocacy for children with disabilities, others have told me that their school district has denied accommodations in LEAP remediation over the summer and telling them that's only for the test not for the remediation class.

I think there needs to be a better system of communication than the one now. We need one that provides everyone with the correct information for all students. What we're doing now isn't working in a lot of areas.

BTW, I love the LEAP hotline! This is a great asset for families and one that I regularly tell families about.

Please do something about louisianapass.org
When my whole class is on their notebooks the system bogs down and it takes a long time to move to the next question. Is this a server problem??

My students get frustrated and don't want to use the site. If it is a problem with our site or equipment please advise.

Thanks I hope this gets straightened out soon.

The Tutoring Hotline is an EXCELLENT resource that is available for all 4th and 8th grade students and parents of 4th and 8th grade 'LEAPers.' As a Distinguished Educator serving in the RSD, I seek opportunities to share all of the many resources that the DOE has to offer with my schools. This hotline has proven to be a great tool for the students who took advantage of this service.

Next school year, I hope that the hotline will be available from August - June. In doing so, this service will be available throughout the academic school year and it would offer additional assistance and support to the students who must retest in the summer.

Thanks for your postings. We really appreciate the feedback.

I will have someone check on the 'bogging' down issue.

We will look into the expansion of the hotline, too.

We will also take a look into the accommodations communication piece.

Best of luck to you all. Keep the comments coming.

A great deal of info on the Teach LA site is out dated. Is this the responsibility of the individual districts or the DOE? I received a reply to my email inquiry very quickly from a DOE employee and I appreciate this.
