TANF After-School for All
Program Description
TANF After-School for All (ASFA) is an after-school program designed to prevent the incidence of out-of-wedlock births by providing academic intervention for students in low-income communities and low-performing schools. Program goals are to: (1) provide literacy and numeracy remediation, academic enrichment, and safe environments in the after-school hours for K-12 students, and (2) provide opportunities to merge school reform efforts with community resources.
The program is administered through local education agencies (LEAs) with federal funding from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program that flows from the Department of Social Services to the Department of Education. LEAs are strongly encouraged to participate with community-based, non-profit organizations in providing services.
All LEAS, including the Special School District, Recovery School District, and Public Charter Schools are eligible to receive funding for an ASFA program. Although the program places special emphasis on serving students in low-performing, high-poverty schools, all LEAs can apply for funding. Funds are usually awarded annually through a competitive process.
