Policy Statement:
Approved by BESE on March 25, 1999, "Districts shall develop a character education philosophy and implementation plan consistent with locally developed curriculum."



Programs Already in Place in Louisiana:

Character Counts (4-H): presently being implemented or piloted in varying degrees in parish/city school districts. Contact: Dr. Don Hammett at LSU Agriculture Center's Cooperative Extension (225) 388-2196.

Character First: Municipal program adopted by the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Contact: Mrs. Jenny Ponder, Character Education Consultant, Mayor's Office of Baton Rouge, Louisiana (225) 389-7871.

Character Links: a research-based, academic solution to character building that links Louisiana content standards to real-life applications. This effective program requires no teacher preparation and provides a Home Link that encourages parental involvement and engages community stakeholders. This program is currently being used in many districts throughout Louisiana and the nation. Learning For Life (Boy Scouts of America): Community and school program. Contact: Mr. Johnny Mitchell, Learning for Life Executive, Monroe, Louisiana (318) 325- 4634.

Learning For Life: A character ecucation program for K-12 students. This program is currently being used in public and private schools. Contact: Austin Badon Character Education Director New Orleans Area Council Boy Scouts of America (504) 889-0388.

Lessons in Character (David Brooks, nationally recognized expert in the field): currently being piloted in Rapides Parish as The Bunkie Middle School STAR Project. Contact Mr. Warren Patterson, Bunkie Middle School, Bunkie, Louisiana (318) 346-7227.

Quest: Skills for Growing and Skills for Adolescence. Contact: Darlene G. French, Iberia Parish Educational Center, 1204 LeMaire Street, New Iberia, LA 70560 TEL (337) 364-7641; FAX (318) 367-9611.

Manners of the Heart: A manners and etiquette curriculum for elementary school students. This program is in place locally at St. James Episcopal School, Baton Rouge, LA. It is also being used nationally by both public and private schools. Contact: Jill M.
