8(g) Local Teacher Quality Program Funding Priorities

The 8(g) Local Teacher Quality Program was implemented to assist local school districts and schools in addressing their certification shortage issues, professional development, and leadership development needs. This program provides funding to assist local school systems and eligible nonpublic schools to coordinate their efforts to increase the number of Highly Qualified teachers and school leaders to have a positive impact on student achievement.


1. Reduce number of teachers with nonstandard certification

Increase number of certified teachers in the district/school according to the state critical shortage areas (math, science, special education) or the local critical shortage areas using strategies such as, but not limited to:
a) Enrollment in Alternate Certification programs such as the Practitioner Teacher Program, Master's Degree Alternate Program or Non-Master's Alternate Program, and
b) Assistance with Praxis preparation and/or registration fees.



2. Increase the number of

a) Increase or expand teachers' knowledge and skills in their core academic area of job assignment in order to meet the requirements of Highly Qualified;
b) Provide assistance with Praxis preparation and/or registration fees;
c) Meet teachers' needs for Highly Qualified based on the certification evaluation process.



3. Increase the pool of school/teacher leaders

a) Increase or expand administrators' knowledge and skills in the area of their job assignment in order to meet the requirements of "highly qualified;"
b) Provide administrators assistance with Praxis preparation and/or registration fees.



4. Provide high quality professional development

a) Meet mandatory professional development as required for certification renewal for personnel certificated after June 30, 2002 (150 hours over five years); or
b) Address school improvement as a cohort.

Note: BESE policy states that if a local school or school system are using 8(g) funds for professional development, they must indicate how their federal funds are being used to support those same activities.
