Host a Healthful Party - Activity 2
Use some of the following recipe ideas:
Fruit juice served with added club soda provides the fizz that many students like.
Using seasonal cookie cutters, cut prepared sandwiches in party shapes.
Make Holiday Snack Mix.
Be creative and experiment with your own ingredients. Remember that nuts are high in fat and some children are allergic to them.
- 2 cups Cheerios
- 1 cup raisins
- 2 cups Puffed Wheat
- ¼ cup peanuts
- 2 cups Rice Chex
- ½ cup coconut
- 1 cup chocolate chips
Mix all ingredients together. Store in tightly covered container. Serves 14.
Make Fruit Kabobs.
- Choose from fresh, frozen or canned fruits: Apples, bananas, cantaloupe, cherries, grapes, honeydew melon, peaches, pineapple, strawberries.
- Toothpicks or skewers.
Remove seeds or pits if necessary.
Cut into l-inch chunks.
Spear fruits onto skewers or toothpicks or serve with fruit dip.
Make Holiday Fruit Spread.
- 1-8 oz. can unsweetened crushed pineapple
- 1-8 oz. Package Neufchatel cheese, softened
- 1t. honey
Drain crushed pineapple. Stir together pineapple, cheese and honey until well blended.
Serve with fresh fruit, bagel or graham crackers.
Serves 24.
Make "Holly Jolly Popcorn" (or serve plain popcorn).
- 6 c. prepared popcorn
- 2 T margarine
- 1 t. red gelatin dessert mix
- 1 t. green gelatin dessert mix
Divide popcorn in two equal amounts. Keep warm in oven.
Melt one tablespoon margarine. Stir in red gelatin mix.
Place one portion of popcorn in zippered
plastic bag. Add margarine, zip and shake.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for green popcorn.
When cooled, combine colored popcorn.
Serves 6.
Make Rudolph Delights.
- 12 graham crackers (2 inch square)
- 1/2 c. peanut butter
- 1/4 c. raisins
- 1/2 c. tiny pretzel twists
- 5 Maraschino cherries
Using a serrated edge knife, carefully slice each cracker in half diagonally. (This may take a little practice so count on extra crackers.)
Spread one teaspoon of peanut butter on each cracker triangle.
Use two raisins for eyes, 1 small piece of cherry for nose. Break and arrange pretzel twists for antlers.
Serves 10.
Make "Saltless Seasoning Sampler." (Great Gift Idea)
- 1 t. celery seed, ground
- 2 1/2 t. marjoram, crushed
- 2 1/2 t. summer savory, crushed
- 1 1/2 t. thyme, crushed
- 1 1/2 t. basil, crushed
Mix all ingredients in a plastic bag.
Place in glass baby food jars or individual plastic bags and decorate with red ribbons.
Attach the following note:
Roses are red.
Violets are blue.
I left out the salt,
Because I love you.
