Learning Activities

1. Plan a happy, healthy party.
Consider the following suggestions:
  • Variety is the “spice of life” and “life of the party.”  Plan several contrasting activities – active and quiet, indoor and outdoor, individual and group.
  • Try something NEW.  Children like adventure.  In addition to familiar games and foods, offer something new.
  • Plan creative experiences such as art, music, and cooking.  Party ideas include the following:
a. Make “spiders” by painting paper egg carton sections black and inserting four large black pipe cleaners and moveable plastic eyes.
b. Play Monster Mash (a variation of musical chairs) using spooky music or sound effects.

  • Involve the students in planning and preparing the party.  Let them make decorations and favors.  One idea is to freeze water in a disposable glove.  Remove the glove and add the “frozen hand” to the punch to create a bewitching brew.
  • Put food in its proper place.  Refreshments should complement the fun, but should not become the “main event.”
  • Be sure that each child receives a prize or favor, if such rewards are given.
  • Don’t use food as rewards or prizes.  Individuals sometime use food to satisfy emotional needs, a practice which can lead to overeating and eating disorders.
  • Choose foods for fun, good taste and health.  Parties that feature healthful foods provide opportunities for children to practice making wise food choices.  Additional healthy party ideas include graham crackers, oatmeal raisin cookies, and fruit juice popsicles.
  • Ask plenty of adults to supervise and join the fun.
2. Use some of the following recipe ideas.
  • Fruit juice served with added club soda provides the fizz that many students like.
  • Using seasonal cookie cutters, cut prepared sandwiches in party shapes.
Make Ghoulish Gorp.
Gorp (Good Old-fashioned Raisins and Peanuts) is a high fiber, high-energy snack food. Be creative and experiment with your own ingredients. Remember that nuts are high in fat and some children are allergic to them.
2 cups Cheerios
1 cup raisins
2 cups Puffed Wheat
¼ cup peanuts
2 cups Rice Chex
½ cup coconut
1 cup chocolate chips

Mix all ingredients together. Store in tightly covered container. Serves 14.

Make Skeleton Hands.

6 clear disposable gloves
12 cups air popped popcorn
½ cup slivered almonds or 30 candy corn
