  • Thin sheets of foam or fabric for the characters
  • Cardboard for the frames to add dimension to the bulletin board
  • Small gold adhesive stars (for 5-8 grade)

Learning Activity

1. Kindergarten - 4 grade Review the US Dietary Guidelines with students. Visit the USDA website to review the US Dietary Guidelines with the students. As a class, students can create a list of characteristics of a person who is healthy. Take a picture of each student and have it mounted on a picture frame made out of construction paper. Note that people who are healthy come in all shapes and sizes.

2. Grades 5-8 Review the US Dietary Guidelines with students. Visit the USDA website to review the US Dietary Guidelines. Set dietary physical activity goals based upon the Dietary Guidelines. Help students determine how to make healthier eating choices and add physical activity to their daily routines. Ask the class for about ten suggestions to list on individual pieces of paper. The goals should be attainable. These goals can be as simple as
  • Eating an extra piece of fruit three times a week
  • Eating pretzels instead of potato chips
  • Drinking reduced-fat milk instead of whole milk three times a week
  • Drink two less sodas each week, instead drink more water and milk
  • Selecting and trying the fruits and vegetables offered at school lunch
  • Trying a variety of foods from the grain group
  • After school, play outside for 30 minutes before watching television or playing video games
Encourage students to share their goals with their families. Mount each suggestion along with the student's name on a frame made out of construction paper. Display frames with goals throughout the classroom or cafeteria. Each day or time that they meet one of their goals, gold stars are placed on their picture frames. Discuss ways to help them achieve their goals. Encourage students to continue to meet their goals even after the unit has been completed.

3. Grades 9-12
Review the US Dietary Guidelines with students. Visit the USDA website to review the US Dietary Guidelines. Use the lesson plan The ABCs of Healthful Eating to review the Dietary Guidelines.
