Learning Activities

1. Establish cleanliness rules.
Cleanliness in food preparation and consumption is an important safety concern.  Students need to develop an appreciation for sanitation.  Proper hand washing and handling of food represent the most effective methods of preventing the transfer of disease and chemicals.  Make a poster of sample rules.  Include rules such as the following:
  • Wash hands with soap and water before you eat or touch food, and after you touch animals, cough or sneeze or use the bathroom.
  • Clean all cooking utensils, food preparation and serving areas.
  • If food or utensils drop on the floor, wash, throw away or replace with clean items.
  • Do not touch eating and drinking surfaces of silverware, glasses or plates.
  • Wipe up all spills immediately.
  • Students not feeling well should be kept away from food preparation.
2. Demonstrate proper technique for hand washing.
Demonstrate correct hand washing procedures and allow each student to practice.
  1. Wet hands and wrists with water.
  2. Lather hands with soap.
  3. Scrub each hand with the other creating friction and rotating hands for 20 seconds.
  4. Rinse hands thoroughly with water.
  5. Dry hands and wrists with paper towels.
  6. Turn off water faucet using a paper towel.
3. Play a hand washing game.
Coat the student's hands in cooking oil and cinnamon.  Tell the student that the cinnamon represents bad germs.  Instruct the student to try to wash all the bad germs off his hands.
