Literacy and Numeracy

Superintendent Paul Pastorek’s vision is to create a world-class education system for all students in Louisiana and this can only be done by having ALL students reading, writing and doing mathematics at or above grade level by the fourth grade. The Ensuring Literacy and Numeracy for All Initiative is designed to accomplish this vision. For our students to compete successfully in the world of tomorrow, our number one priority must be to develop our early learners into readers, writers, and mathematicians.

Through the Ensuring Literacy and Numeracy for All Initiative, Louisiana’s resources focus first on our youngest learners (PreK-4th grade). The initiative:

  • Develops the reading and mathematics foundation students need for future success
  • Provides the technical assistance and professional development essential for PreK-4th grade teachers and administrators to address the diverse needs of all learners
  • Provides the supports necessary at the district level to have all students reading, writing, and performing mathematics at or above grade level by grade 4.

Louisiana's data has shown that there is also a great need for developing reading skills at the middle and high school level. The Initiative has developed an Adolescent Literacy Plan (http://www.louisianaschools.net/lde/lan/3060.html) that focuses on Leadership and Sustainability, Standards-Based Curriculum, Assessment, Instruction and Intervention, and Professional Learning and Resources.
