The primary purpose of the Federal Public Charter School Program (PCSP) (Title V, Part B, Subpart 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), is to expand the number of high quality charter schools available to students across the nation by providing federal financial assistance for charter school program design, initial implementation, and planning as well as evaluate the effects of charter schools, including their effects on students (in particular, on student academic achievement), staff, and parents. The Louisiana Department of Education has been awarded federal charter school program funds under provisions of the PCSP for the purpose of supporting school systems and community groups in their efforts to establish and operate quality charter schools in Louisiana.
