Classroom Interpreting
This site is designed to help educational teams in K – 12 settings support deaf and hard of hearing students who use educational interpreters to access education and social interaction. Other service providers, such as speech pathologists, social workers, and deaf educators, may find useful information on this site.


Educational Interpreter Rubric

Educational Interpreters are considered qualified when they have met the requirements for standards as passed by BESE in 2001. A qualified interpreter must have a minimum of 3.0 on the Videotaped Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment or obtained a rating of Proficient on the Basic Cued Speech Proficiency Rating Test. They must also possess a Grandfather Permit or a Provisional Certificate, plus twenty documented hours of professional development.


This rubric is a tool designed as a support for school principals or teachers who conduct the evaluation of educational interpreters on staff. It is a model and can be modified as needed in your district. It is recommended that this tool be shared with the educational interpreters at the beginning of the school year to identify the areas of expected job performance. This allows them the opportunity to work toward higher standards. This rubric is a guide; please expand it to meet the needs of the students in your school or district.
