New School Performance Scores Released; Comparisons Difficult

Appendix

  • One school, Robert E. Lee High School in East Baton Rouge Parish, has been waived from sanctions because its testing population was composed of over 25% displaced students. Over 200 Louisiana schools were granted special consideration by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and/or the U. S. Department of Education due to the loss of extensive instructional time and the disruption caused by large numbers of displaced students because of the 2005 Hurricanes.
  • Twenty-two schools are labeled “Academically Unacceptable” but will not be required to implement sanctions. These schools had Baseline School Performance Scores above 60.0 in 2004-05 and are free from sanctions due to the extensive changes made to the Accountability System.

  • In addition to the 84 schools receiving the “Academically Unacceptable” label, 4 schools are in School Improvement Level 2 (SI 2) for failing the subgroup component even though they have School Performance Scores above 60. According to NCLB, once a school enters School Improvement 2 for not meeting Subgroup Component requirements for 2 consecutive years, the school must meet these requirements for 2 consecutive years before the school can exit School Improvement 2. If any of these schools are Title I schools, they must offer “choice” in addition to the sanctions for all School Improvement 2 schools. Any of these 4 schools that are not Title I schools are not required to offer school choice.

  • Forty schools are in School Improvement 3. They must continue to offer school choice and rewrite their School Improvement Plans with the support of a District Assistance Team. They are eligible for a Distinguished Educator if their district enters into a partnership with the Louisiana Department of Education. If these schools are Title I schools, they must also offer Supplemental Educational Services, which is defined by the U.S. Department of Education as tutoring or extra help provided to students in reading, language arts/English, and math from approved providers. This extra help can be provided before or after school, on weekends, or in the summer.
