Assessment Strategies for Teachers and Students

Assessment strategies that provide teachers and students with methods which vary from quick checks using paper and pencil to other methods of non-traditional assessments are the focus of this workshop. Educators develop assessment skills which connect their curriculum and instruction to real-world methods of determining student understanding. Methods for teaching students self-assessment techniques are also included.

Data Analysis and Data-Driven Instruction

Data trainings may be are designed to assist school teams with test data analysis, the development of a needs assessment based on a complete data collection/analysis process, or using data to drive instruction. Participants identify, collect, triangulate data to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the school and to determine the underlying causes for both. Participants may receive training in making informed instructional decisions using data. This training may be customized at the request of schools and school districts.

Data-Driven Leadership for School Improvement

This seven-session seminar is for administrators and their central office counterparts who want to become competent and confident instructional leaders. At each of the three-hour, monthly sessions, participants will learn practical methods of checking implementation of School Improvement strategies. A commitment to attendance at all sessions is required.

Accountability/Louisiana Needs Assessment Module (LANA)

Louisiana’s School and District Accountability System is intended to drive fundamental change in classroom teaching by helping schools and communities focus on improved student achievement. The system is designed to encourage and support the school improvement process. Participants will receive a general overview of the Accountability System, followed by professional development on the first piece of the School Improvement process, the needs assessment. Working from student assessment results, districts and schools will use the LANA to collect and analyze pertinent data for use in the school improvement planning process.

School Improvement Planning Module

Participants are led through the process of writing a School Improvement Plan as outlined in the Louisiana Department of Education’s "Tools for Success” and "School Improvement Plan Template.” Emphasis is placed on planning as a process and quality implementation/evaluation for success. Participation in the Louisiana Needs Assessment Module (LANA) is a prerequisite for attending the School Improvement Planning Module. The Accountability/Louisiana Needs Assessment module is a pre-equisite to attending this professional development offering.

Degree of Implementation (DIG)

The writing of the School Improvement Plan is just the beginning step in impacting student achievement in a given school. The second step is the quality implementation of the plan. The DIG is a process designed to systematically collect and analyze evidence to measure the level and quality of implementation of pre-determined indicators for each strategy in the School Improvement Plan. The Accountability/LANA and SIP modules are prerequisites to attending this professional development offering.

Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS)

The DIBELS assessment tool is used to measure critical skills that ensure early reading success. Teachers and educational support staff are trained to administer seven, one-minute assessments which predict how well children are likely to be doing in reading comprehension by the end of third grade. The results of grade-level indicators are used as a screening instrument to determine needed intervention. The three-step training process involves Administration and Scoring, Mentoring Scoring and Intervention training.

Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale-Revised (ECERS-R)

The ECERS-R training consists of an overview of the subscales and items; discussion of classroom environment; examination of terminology; as well as a review of the purpose, procedures, and scoring system.

Literacy in the Content Areas

The content of this professional development opportunity aligns with Louisiana's Literacy Plan as well as with the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum Literacy Strategies. Developed to meet the needs of classroom teachers of students in grades PK to 12 (all content areas), specific instructional and assessment strategies for improving reading and writing skills across content areas are covered. These teaching and learning strategies are addressed by grade level, content area, and student needs using the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum. .

6 + 1 Traits Writing

6 + 1 Traits Writing focuses on the individual traits of writing as part of the writing process. A national model developed by NWREL, Northwest Regional Educational Lab, 6 + 1 Traits helps students to self assess while assisting teachers in using models of good literature to teach good writing.

Louisiana PASS Online LEAP/iLEAP Practice Workshop

Louisiana Department of Education's Louisiana PASS is an on-line program which enables teachers to engage their elementary, middle, and high school level students in practice for state assessments. LA PASS provides similar formats and feedback with tutorials if needed. Practice can be provided in the areas of English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies using multiple choice, open-ended, and essay items.

Positive Discipline Workshop

The process of Positive Discipline involves teaching students to monitor and adjust their own behaviors in a teaching-learning atmosphere in which all persons are treated with dignity and respect. Positive Discipline methods empower teachers with the skills to prepare students for successful living and to significantly reduce discipline problems through self-discipline, responsibility, cooperation, and problem solving.

Teaching/Learning Strategies Across Content Areas

Teaching/Learning Strategies Across Content Areas enhances a teacher's "Toobox" for providing a variety of strategies for all learning styles. This training uses the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum, Grade Level Expectations, Activities, and Assessments to assist teachers in developing an understanding of the strategies and techniques, building proficiency in their use, and connect strategies to current curriculum, instruction, and assessment in order to improve student achievement. Topics of some trainings include: Literature Circles, Cooperative Learning Strategies, Socratic Circles, Writing Across Content Areas, and Math Strategies in Specific Strand Areas. At the next stage of training, Differentiated Instructional Strategies builds uponn the skills and strategies learning in this training and/or Thinking Maps.

Thinking Maps

This professional development provides teachers with the knowledge of how to teach, integrate, and assess using visual tools. Each Thinking Map is associated with a clearly defined, common thinking process language and allows learning communities to have a common visual language.
