Community Based Tutorial Programs
The Community Based Tutorial Program (CBT) design was presented to the Legislature by the Department of Education during the 1984-85 session. The first year's funding included $100,000 with five positions, and was implemented in the fall of 1985 at the Greater Beach Grove Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. The program was created to provide additional instructional time with a reduced teacher-student ratio in the after school hours, with a summer program scheduled in June and July. Sites are located predominately in faith-based facilities, with the state providing funds for teachers and supplies, and sites supplying utilities, snacks, recreation, and field trips. There are more than 115 sites, currently serving over 3000 students in both urban and rural settings. Activities center on homework assistance, LEAP and The Iowa Tests preparation, and enrichment.
