Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I apply for a job in the Department of Education?
A. Complete a Form SF10- This is the standard application that is used to apply for all classified state jobs. In Baton Rouge, you can pick one up at the Department of Civil Service Testing Office, on the 1st floor of the Agriculture Building, 5825 Florida Boulevard (hours of business are 8:00- 4:00). In New Orleans, you can get an application in room 411 of the State Office Building at 325 Loyola Avenue (open from 8:00 to 4:30).
Applications are also available at all Department of Labor Job Service Offices. You can also download one from the Department of State Civil Service website at www.dscs.state.la.us.

All classified vacancies at the Department of Education are posted in the Job Search section of the Department of Civil Service's website. When you have identified a job you are interested in, click on the job title for additional information about the position, including specific instructions on where and to whom you should send your completed SF-10.

Q. Do I need a Civil Service grade to apply for a position at the Department of Education?
A. That depends on the job title for which you are applying. Many of our jobs are considered "shortage" jobs and do not require a grade. However, there are a large number of job titles that do require a grade. It is a good idea to submit your application to the Department of Civil Service for all positions for which you are interested in applying, so that you will have a grade if and when a vacancy is posted for that job title. The vacancy announcements posted on the Department of Civil Service Job Search will specify if a grade is required to apply.

Q. What are the benefits of working for the state?
A. There are many benefits of state employment. Please refer to the Benefits section of this website for specifics.

Q. Can leave earned in a parish school system be transferred to the department if I am selected for employment?
A. Unfortunately, no. Leave earned in the parish school system may be held by the parish for future retirement purposes. You should check with your parish school board office to determine what options you may have for any leave balance you have at the time of separation.
