Reading and Literacy
The Charge
The Reading and Literacy Section serves as the LDE’s Instructional Leadership, providing professional development and technical assistance in reading that is focused on a comprehensive, job-embedded, staff development system. The goal is to provide professional development and capacity building in reading to improve student achievement to local education agencies (LEAs), Regional Education Service Centers (RESC), Distinguished Educators, and other staff within the Louisiana Department of Education.
In conjunction with the Instructional Leadership of Regional Reading First coordinators, the Reading and Literacy Section will ensure that the Louisiana Department of Education will have designated individuals with sufficient time and expertise to provide instructional leadership and clear duties and responsibilities for subgrantees as well as to design, implement, train, monitor, provide ongoing technical assistance, and evaluate all state and federal Reading programs, using the Department’s accountability system.
In addition, the Reading and Literacy section uses methods of determining the effectiveness of Reading programs, providing this process to local districts as well as coordinating and providing regional activities designed to fill district gaps in teacher training in the area of reading. Summer institutes will support a professional environment in which teachers gain the necessary knowledge and skills needed to meet the unique needs of students in their classroom.
