Each year schools receive numerical scores known as School Performance Scores (SPS). Louisiana’s goal is for every school in the state to achieve a Baseline SPS of 120 by 2014.
School Performance Scores are based on the following calculations:
- K-5 Schools – Attendance Index (10%), Assessment Index (90%)
- K-8, 7-8 Schools – Attendance Index (5%), Dropout Index (5%), and
Assessment Index (90%)
- 9-12 Schools - Graduation Index (30%) and Assessment Index (70%)
Beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, Louisiana began assigning districts and schools letter grades. Letter grades correspond to Baseline School Performance Scores, and are based on the following grading scale:
Letter Grade |
SPS Range (2010-2011) |
Approx. % of Students Below Basic |
A |

0-12% |
B |

13-24% |
C |

25-36% |

F |

62-100% |
*Scale will change in 2012
Whether a school receives a plus or minus or no symbol following its letter grade is determined by comparing its 2010 Baseline School Performance Score to its 2011 Growth Score. A plus sign (+) signifies a school has improved enough to meet its 2011 assigned Growth Target. A minus sign (-) indicates a school’s 2011 Growth Performance Score has declined by at least one-tenth of a point from its 2010 Baseline Performance Score. If a school does not receive a plus (+) or minus (-) sign, it signifies the school has either shown no growth or in some cases, improved its Baseline Score, but not enough to meet its 2011 Growth Performance Goal.
While a Baseline School Performance Score represents two years of data, a Growth School Performance Score depicts one year of data.
